BRENNA KRAUSE'S BEST OF 2003

Best New Releases:
1 The Black Keys - Thickfreakness [Fat Possum]
No bass - all fuzzy, ear-piercing feedback, and is guy that who is singing really white? Damn!  I have expressed my great adoration for this band on numerous occasions and cannot plead with you enough to go see them live if you are lucky enough to have them come to a watering hole near you.  They are the best band.  Shake your ass!

2 Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - Fever to Tell [Interscope]
Blistering, sexy, rock n roll from a rad band with a lead singer who actually makes going to a show, a show.  Stage theatrics arent for everyone, but Karen O does right by them even if she is rumored to be pissed most of the time.  Shes a rock star!

3 The Kills - Keep on Your Mean Side
This is a super moody, gritty, droning album.  Vv a.k.a Alison has had to endure the comparison to PJ Harvey for a lot longer than I could guess, but it is true and it is appealing.  Her voice is a huge part of what makes this album so good that and of course the exceptional music.  Buy This Album

The Gossip - Movement [Kill Rock Stars]
Speaking of ass-shaking (see #1), you cannot help but do so when you hear Beth Ditto belt out a sultry, southern-twanged tune from this album.  Again, another band best heard live, but this record is by far their best recording.  Although, they did put out a live recording from a NYC show this year and I would feel pretty comfortable saying that it probably kicks ass, but since I dont own that yet, Im going with Movement. Marilyn Manson - The Gold Age of Grotesque [Interscope]
This album is the best one since Antichrist Superstar.  It is a return to a seriously sleazy- inducing feeling a great record.  Just dont watch the tedious DVD that comes with it that is not so great.

John Mellencamp - Trouble No More [Sony]
I love John Mellencamp.  I love the Americana that he represents, so clean and crisp.  So hopeful and pure.  This record has him covering some of his favorites, making it sound like he owns the songs.

7 The Music - The Music [Virgin]
Yes, it was initially released in 2002, but the enhanced CD was released this past February, ha! It is one of my most favorites, and I consider myself lucky to be able to include it on my best of list! This album hit me the way Primal Screams Screamadelica hit me: immediately and passionately.  This record is so good, lyrically (if you can understand the mumbling delivery) and musically.

8 Beyonce - Dangerously in Love [Sony]
Yeah, I own it.  Crazy in Love is a badass dance number hot, hot, hot.  If this song doesnt get you off your ass, then I just dont think you will ever get up.  If I cant be silly and actually sing the line, youve got me sprung and I dont care who sees then what the hell am I doing? Oh and the remainder of the record is suckitacious.

9 Various Artists - Desert Sessions Vol. 9 & 10 [Ipecac]
This album rocks, because I adore P.J. Harvey, who hasn't put anything out in quite a while.  While there are several talented collaborators on this Josh Homme side project, it is P.J. who is showcased or rather the one who shines brightest.  Something to hold us over until a full record comes out.  The stuff with the guy from Ween is pretty good as well.

10 Various Artists - Yes New York [Atlantic]
Features 16 tracks by New York artists.  While the record is fun to listen to, there are two songs that stand out.  Zero Point by the Rogers Sisters made me want to see them live, which I did and my boyfriend and I were blown away by them.  Deceptacon (DFA Remix), Le Tigres original work is injected with the disco happiness that is the DFA, and it is sweet.  I long for a whole album of DFA remixed Le Tigre songs; that would be rad.  Then I could bebop my way through the day. Radio 4s submission, Save Your City, is great also.
