CHELSEA COCHRAN'S BEST OF 2004

Best New Releases:
1 Tom Waits - Real Gone [Anti]
Listening to Real Gone, I become completely absorbed by Tom Waits growling, haunting voice.  But its truly the combination of strong percussion and dark lyrics that make this album.  Tom Waits tells the stories of the downtrodden and of political treachery until you are almost to the point of tears.  But, what did you expect?  Its Tom Waits.

2 Grails - Redlight [Neurot]
A friend introduced me to Grails first album, Burden of Hope, and I suppose that Im still indebted to him.  Redlight is the second installment from the talented Portland band.  Grails music becomes personal for everyone who hears it.  For me, it always brings back long-forgotten memories and moments of my past.  The music is more easily described in emotions than anything else.  Honest, painful, hopeful, inspiring

3 Sparta - Porcelain [Geffen]
I acquired this album at the end of a less than enjoyable summer.  It was time for healing, and Porcelain was the perfect album for that.  Heart-wrenching lyrics and meaty guitars.  Sometimes thats all a girl needs.

4 Pinback - Summer in Abaddon  [Touch & Go]
Pinback has a universally likeable sound.  Catchy rhythms, melodic vocals, and clever lyrics.  Even my 60-year old mother liked this album when I popped it into her car stereo.  Sure, being appealing to senior citizens may not be the best endorsement for Pinback, but my mom is much cooler than most.

5 Interpol - Antics  [Matador]
Interpols latest musical installment, Antics, is my second favorite Interpol album.  Im a much bigger fan of their first release, Turn on the Bright Lights, but Antics still has the depressed, brooding tone that appealed to me the first time around.
