GARY KNIGHT'S BEST OF 2004
| Best New Releases: |
| 1 |
 |
Feist - Let It Die [Universal]
Anita Baker for the indie
masses! The part-time Broken Social Scener delivers a gorgeous, sultry set of
songs to warm/console your aching heart. An intimate, yet adventurous
record. Boss pipes, too (anybody else hear Jeff Buckley in there?).

Elliot Smith - From a Basement on the Hill [Anti]
At once a bittersweet
coda and a final foot forward for Mr. Smith. This may not be "his" version,
but these are his songs regardless of track order (and despite some
questionable omissions). We may never hear the other material, but with
songs as good as "Pretty (Ugly Before)" and "Twilight," we should be
counting our lucky shooting stars.

Wilco - A Ghost Is Born [Nonesuch]
The best rock band on
the planet right now. Just go buy it already.

The Concretes - Self-Titled [Licking
Fingers]
A startling debut from
the Swedish outfit. Like Hope Sandoval discovering Diana Ross and The
Velvet Underground.

Morrissey - You Are the Quarry [Sanctuary]
His most tuneful album
to date, but don't call it a comeback. Just call it very good, especially
the menacing "How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel?"

Rufus Wainwright - Want Two [Dreamworks]
You either love the
voice or hate it, so I suppose it wouldn't matter to all you naysayers if I
told you just how exceptional "The Art Teacher" is, John Singer Sargent
reference and all?

The Zutons - Who Killed... The Zutons [Deltasonic]
These
Liverpudlians must have the best record collection around, since they manage
to include just about everything on here. A fine rock/pop/garage/soul/funkadelic/country
record.

Guided by Voices - Half Smiles of the
Decomposed [Matador]
Hardcore fans approve,
so I hear, but as a newbie I don't have the (unfortunate) luxury of weighing
it against older releases. These are simply the most moving rock songs
you're likely to hear this year. They say it's their last one, and damn if
it doesn't sound like it. Still, it seems to top itself song after song
always a good thing.

The Killers - Hot Fuss [Island]
The best new-wave
inspired pop album of the year. You can't deny these songs.

Interpol - Antics
[Matador]
Not as much fun as The
Killers, but better; and not because they're more "serious." It might be
for the guitars on "Narc," which are jagged and driven like they are on any
other Interpol song, but those flourishes on the chorus invoke a
near-religious experience. I was going to say something about "finding
light in the shadows" but thought better of it.
