NESSIM HALIOUA'S BEST OF 2004

Best New Releases:
1 Dalida - Forever [Orlando]
She has more issues of greatest hits compilations than the Beatles, but thats only because its an excuse for brilliant cover art and because its yet another attempt to get the world to adore her more than Franoise Hardy. Ill let you be the judge of who rocks harder. Actually I wont; youre not to be trusted. Believe me, Dalida is more deserving of your love.

2 Morrissey - You Are the Quarry [Attack]
What do you do when you are the Messiah but you live in Hell A? People name their pets after you, and you put out an album slamming George Bushs American imperialism. Thats what you do, but not if you are Eminem or the Beastie Boys because you are Morrissey, and everyone should have your portrait tattooed on their bodies. Bless you.

3 The Swayback - The Swayback
[Too Bad You're Beautiful]

What can I tell you other than next year, around this time, their major label debut will be on your top ten list? This would have been my favorite record of the year had it featured Our Lady of Internal Combustion and Queen of the Undressed, but its still good; and until you own it, youre not getting a Christmas card from me. Its as simple as that.

Slim Cessna's Auto Club - The Bloody Tenant Truth and Peace [Alternative Tentacles]
Oh, did you think of a better Gospel Goth-Country band to take their place as the Kings of Backwoods Terrorism? Didnt think so; this record gives me nightmares and makes me want to throw up my demons.

Stereolab - Margarine Eclipse [Elektra]
I have been spazzing pretty hard lately, so its good that a new Stereolab record came out to chill me out.

Various Artists - The Life Aquatic Soundtrack [Hollywood]
What? There is a Soundtrack on your Top 10? First off, take it easy, it wasnt a great year for breakout artists; and second, when certain people, like Mark Mothersbaugh, come to the door to give you some Brazilian pop star covering songs of the Thin White Duke, what are you going to do? Let him stand outside in the freezing rain holding his record because you think youre too good to let him in? No, youre going to let him in so that he can wipe his dirty boots and let you in on something you didnt know about. So shut the hell up and stop complaining already; this Top 10 list is a soundtrack to your life. So there.

7 The Cure - The Cure [Geffen]
God its been a long time. God it feels good. By God, I mean Robert Smith.

8 Magnetic Fields - I [Nonesuch]
If Stephin Merritt chose the title because he loves his iPod, I love him even more. And dont worry my little white gem, I wont replace you until I can look at my pretty color pictures of my kitty on it, or until I could get a special edition iPod with a U2 theme oroh wait I can do that right now? No, sweetie this isnt a hammer. What? No Im not going to crush you. Fine, but Im gonna keep you in my car, and youre not going to come inside unless I have to change the music that youre holding for me. What? You want to know my new iPods name? Dont be crazy! Are you trying to tell everyone reading this that I named you? Youre out of your mind. People, I dont know what Gloria-I mean shes telling you but, its just not true. (Want a 3G 15 GB iPod, lightly used? Contact nessim@leftoffthedial.com) No, baby, you and me are together for good. Fine, everyone out there dont email me ok?

9 Kayne West - The College Dropout [Roc-A-Fella]
As soon as I found out about Kanye inventing his own first name, I said, My word, I should do the same So I did. Actually neither of us did that, but we each said to each other at the same exact time: Hey dude: lets be awesome. So we did that instead.

10 Nancy Sinatra - Nancy Sinatra [Sanctuary]
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, to the republic for which it stands, one nation under Mozz, indivisible, with liberty and Nancy for all.

In closing, Id like to say that this year was great only because of reissues and comebacks of sorts, so shut the hell up and stop pretending like Michael Moore did you some kind of favor with his movie because he didnt. If he were smart, he would have had the RZA produce his soundtrack and W. wouldnt be president. However, Id like to thank the following artists for releasing box sets, reissues, etc: Nirvana, Elvis Costello (even though Im not convinced that his newer material is deserving of my Top 10 list this year), The Beatles (even though every reviewer of their Capital Albums box set has been incompetent because they do not realize that these albums are necessary not just as collectors items but for proper documentation of Beatle-mania), The Cure (for recently re-mastering and re-releasing Three Imaginary Boys with bonus tracks as well as issuing a box set of b-sides and rarities that came out a day after my birthday; they did it for me ok?), and Morrissey (for making me buy You Are the Quarry twice already); but Im glad that 2004 marks the year when I finally purchased the Complete Stax-Volt Singles Volume 1 box set as well as The Complete 50s Masters Elvis Presley box set. I also got the Complete Atlantic R&B box set, but I got it from Soulseek, so I dont know if that counts. Oops, did I say that out loud? Oh well, downloading is the new shopping if knitting is the new yoga. Listen, this year was great for buying/stealing new and/or used issues of old music, so lets hope that 2005 has some new bands to tickle our fancies. Oooh, cmon bands, tickle my fancy. I dare you!
