Various Artists: 4boxs Sampler
[4boxs]

When you listen to this sampler, you will find yourself drooling at the mouth wondering what happened to your mind, and possibly your pants as well. You won't remember your mother's maiden name, and possibly your own. Keep in mind these are all good things, and please allow me to tell you why.

Typewash kicks things off with "Famous," which features a big ol' spastic dance-punk type of drumbeat courtesy of Joe Bianco, and this throbs continuously while trombonist Mike Hagedorn is blaring his brand of porno-horn all over the place. Hagedorn's playing is featured on every track, and he does all of the engineering as well. Typewash is the name of his band for three of the seven songs on the sampler. These three, along with five more not featured here, are tracks he laid down with Bianco and bassist/guiarist Bret Vandonsel. Each of Typewash's songs has a unique spark to it, sort of like what would happen if you were playing Morphine on one side of the room and Gang of Four on the other side and you can only allow bits and pieces of each record into your ear at any given second.

While Typewash is a true sensory overload, Hagedorn's other project, called 1,2,3,4, is more than just another band with a name that is a pain in the ass to search for in Google. Their sound is less conventional, bordering on avant-garde, especially with their aptly-titled "Track 2" which follows "Famous." While the song is utterly ineffable for any man of words, as a listener on the other hand, it's quite normal to feel as though you are being dragged though a cemetery by a gang of drunk-driving/wheelchair-bound street musicians. If that sounds like something you might experience on "Twin Peaks," it's even more bizarre than that. Things are slowed down quite a bit with "Track 3," which actually appears fifth on the sampler. It is another installment from 1,2,3,4, but the song only features Hagedorn's trombone dueling with Steve Ivan's baritone (not the voice kind). While 1,2,3,4's music is dark and clouded, Typewash offer something from the other end of the spectrum, which could best be described as a brass-knuckle and brass-winded beating for your delicate ears. Go to their website and download all of these songs, and you too will know what it feels like to choose how you will get your ass kicked.
