Adam McIntyre:
Nothing Means Anything
Sometimes Im in the mood for music that doesnt require a lot of thinking, pop tunes that let you just press play then sit back and listen. Other times I need something with introspective lyrics that seem like they were written for me. Adam McIntyres Nothing Means Anything magically satisfies both cravings with catchy songs that happen to tell the story of ending one relationship and beginning another. Pop music and songs about love kind of go hand in hand, but McIntyre takes it a step further by telling his story across the four seasons. Oh, and did I mention Im a total sucker for theme albums? Especially when I can sort of relate to the subject matter? Well, I am. I really like the idea of some quirky, despondent guy from Alabama (they have indie rock there?) writing songs about being sad and lonely, then finding a new love and being inspired to record the musical equivalent of a romantic comedy. Some of McIntyres music is a little cheesy, recalling early Owsley and a less piano-heavy Ben Folds 5, but its honesty is evident in all of the tracks. An occasional alt-country influence prevents the music from being too saccharine. The sound evolves with each song, not only showing McIntyres progress in life and love, but representing fall, winter, spring and finally summer. Listening to the opening Your Only Friend, a melancholy tune about being alone in an empty apartment, its hard to believe the same guy is performing later tracks such as the guitar-driven I Need You. I was definitely rooting for him by the end of the album. But hey, if it doesnt work out with this new girl, at least hell have some good song material.
