Afterthem: 3-Song Demo
[self-released]

Whenever Im playing Zelda on my Nintendo, I love to play some Enya in the background.

Actually, thats a lie; I dont like Enya, and my brother wont let me touch his GameCube. But it does give you an idea of what Afterthem, a new band from New Jersey, sounds like: weird digital blips laced with some off-beat drumming by Chris Rossow and the airy vocals of Joy Epting and Liz Matta.

Thats only Afterdance, the first song of the groups self-titled demo. The next track, I Bin Told, starts off normally enough with a nifty little electric guitar riff by Joe Positive. But then the blips come back, as do Epting and Matta, singing unintelligibly with a melody that doesnt quite match whats going on in the background. Something about morning, and without warning? Im not sure.

What is sure is that theres not much in the way of song structure here. The liner notes brag of odd time signatures; this is an understatement. The Beatles got away with random sound combinations like this at times, but they also had far more conventional songs to even the strange ones out.

Afterthem does not. They have polyrhythmic garage funk (again from the liner notes), which apparently sounds like what happens when a bunch of people get wasted at a party and play whatever instruments are lying around.

In reality, Afterthem is a group of kids experimenting with sound in a friends garage. This process often produces a sound that no one has ever heard before, and, if youre up for that kind of awakening, Afterthem just might be your new favorite band. Otherwise, you may want to stick to the Nintendo.
