 Alex Cole: Carolina True EP

Most CDs that are mainly acoustic-based usually turn out to be boring.  Songs that sound great in a live setting oftentimes end up flat once theyre bathed in the light of a recording studio.  This five-song disc from Alex Cole, while mainly acoustic, has just enough flash to make it listenable and just enough interesting stuff scattered about to make it good.

The main focus of the songs on the disc is Coles lyrics.  They can be heartfelt (write and erase/lines on a page/tell me your heart/tell me we can start) or quirky (Katie was strange/people always said/she had a radio/in her head) but the bare bones of each track is his raspy voice and well-written songs.  Intertwined with each track however, Cole has placed slippery electric guitar lines and minimal bass and drums to make each song a little more interesting to listen to.  Wanting to listen to a band in a bar is one thing; wanting listen to a record over and over again is something entirely different, and Alex Cole seems to know this.  Throughout the 5 songs, theres always a little something added to the mix that pulls your focus and wants you to listen again.

The overall mix of the disc is good the vocals are up front, and the instruments blend together well.  This disc is probably not for those that dont enjoy the singer-songwriter set, but for those that might be getting bored with the genre and are looking for something new, this just might be what theyre looking for.
