Alli With An
I: I Learned By Watching You
While the current trend is to incorporate as many inside jokes in your emo-boy band name/album titles/track titles and liner notes, this pop-punk outfit from Raleigh, NC does have a certain innocent charm to them, which means all can be forgiven. Alli With An I plays fast, loud and clean another reason not to hate them for being cheesy little buggers. One example that painfully sticks out is the opening verse of "Letting Go" in which bassist/part-time vocalist Tom Sowders starts the song with "I've got a box of your old love letters/They smell like your perfume," and you are a cold, heartless son of a bitch if you don't feel awful for him. Something about these teenagers and their mature sense of humility warms you up to them so much so that you really can't despise them for wearing their hearts on their sleeves, as is the current trend. The lyrics are well-thought out as you can expect from a group of guys melancholically reminiscing over their ex-girlfriends, but there is something unrealistic about the whole process of writing a song about a sad break-up and then having hoards of teenage girls throwing themselves at you afterward. The aspect that makes most punk rock guys insanely jealous is the fact that whenever you are at a bar badmouthing your recent ex, any rock and roll chick would tell you to grow up and get over it. Anyway, we digress, but we do not apologize. Hell, if we got paid any less, these reviews would just be our blogs, but oh well. If you actually read through this whole rant on the state of emo-core, you'd probably just be happy to know that if you want to compare this album to anything that has come out recently, think early Saves The Day or Dashboard Confessional with 90% fewer tattoos and 10% more testosterone. This should make for a really great soundtrack if your significant other decides to move out of the place you have together on Christmas Eve and takes your dog, to boot. Happy Listening!
