Aloha: Here Comes Everyone
[Polyvinyl]

Aloha sounds to me like creators of the same sort of challenging post-rock stuff you might think of when someone mentions Tortoise or maybe King Crimson.  Im not really an expert in this type of music, but Aloha has such complicated jazzy grooves on these tracks that it certainly isnt fitting to lump them in with your average pop rock band.  That doesnt mean these songs arent incredibly catchy in their own way.

The second song, Youve Escaped, is light with piano and acoustic guitar, but it still has this really complex vibraphone percussion going on underneath it.  This vibraphone emerges on all sorts of songs, sometimes mixing overtop of some highly irregular drumbeats.  With this brand of subtle percussion, you get a disorienting feeling when the guitar, vocals, piano, violin, etc. are the only things tying you down to a slightly stronger structure.

They tend to remind me a bit of Spoon in places too, like on the single Boys in the Bathtub; however, Alohas sound is really difficult to describe until you hear it.  These guys are from Ohio, and have done a few albums and tours previously, but it seems like this new album is really showing some strong promise.  The singing is great, and Tony Cavallrio can sound like a weird mix of Jeff Buckley and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol when you listen to a track like Be Near.  The same sort of melancholy youd expect from those vocalists seems to permeate a lot of the songs on the album, but the lyrics here are fresh; and, as I said earlier, the music is really completely different.  It makes Here Comes Everyone a very different listening experience than with most albums Ive ever heard, yet the musicianship is so varied, complex and precise, that you really cant help but like these guys.  If you ever find yourself drawn to progressive rock artists that throw the typical blues structure of most songs straight out the window, youll want to hear this release.
