Andrew: What's It All About
[Avebury]

On the heels of an Alfie remake comes a record that asks that famous question and comes away with the only necessary conclusion: life is long, and then it goes fast.  Andrew Sandoval, a man whose songwriting talents just barely exceed his physical gifts, knows this and hes made a pretty good record about it.

I Cant Be Lonely, should squelch any fears of a boring existential journey (after all, self-pity in song is just self-pity, unless its got a good hook!).  Its actually quite a brilliant little pop song: a rather unconventional look at the brighter side of unrequited love (hey, what are we holding onto sometimes?).

Mr. Sandoval manages this trick often on his new record, marrying pop with clever wordplay.  Hes got a good record collection too: Or, Maybe Not is right out of Big Stars songbook (see Blue Moon), and How It Goes echoes The Byrds.  But lyrics arent always his thing, and where words fall short, he makes up for it in melody.  Where I Want To Be is simply sublime as a Left Banke send-up, and the playful ELO/McCartney-esque How Do You Go On? is a delight.  A killer middle-eight on Round Going Round should win over a few more on the fence.
