Annie Lin:
Truck Was Struck
I have one question for Annie LinArent you just a touch young to be dabbling in concept albums? This question is not meant to reveal my own age-ist attitudes, but seriously, I tend to associate the phrase concept album with seasoned veterans such as Lou Reed, Nick Cave, and Tori Amos. Thats probably because the art form can be pretty tricky to master. Undoubtedly, a bad concept album is twice as embarrassing as any other that disgusts you. In this case, Id like to think of Lins Truck Was Stuck as a sort of declaration of bravery. Its nice to see a musician willing to challenge herself and her listeners in such a manner. You are probably asking yourself at this juncture if the music itself on Truck Was Stuck is any good. Actually, no. It is complete Ani DiFranco-esque, fast-spoken folk rubbish in my kind opinion. Most of the songs on this album offer very interesting points of view, exploring multiple characters and emotions. On the other hand, they are intensely unbearable to listen to. I must confess that I have a general bias against most folk music, and Annie Lin is the perfect example of why. When listening to Truck Was Stuck, one is constantly waiting for the music to escalate a little, to move forward, to blossom and explode. It simply never delivers.
