The April Skies: The Breathe EP
[self-released]

Brandishing a decidedly eighties sound and proud of it, The April Skies (who formed in the eighties, by the way) deliver five gorgeous tunes in the vein of early synth pop.  Imagine General Public covering I Melt with You but not quite as catchy and you start to get the idea.

Breathe begins like something out of REMs back catalog (Reckoning, maybe).  Jangly guitars and incessant backbeat compete with synth flourishes and affected English vocals, adding up to a most urgent and delightful chorus.  Sleepyhead segues into early Morrissey-style Brit-pop (Everyday Is Like Sunday, anyone?), while Beautiful Girl features Johnny Marr-style strumming.  Yes, hardly original, but deft hooks and tuneful songwriting are a good thing, no matter the window dressing.  An LP would be welcomed.
