AqPop: Beautifully Smart
[HHBTM]

Sometimes at Left Off The Dial, we get albums to review that are really good.  Sometimes, we get really bad stuff.  And sometimes we get stuff that is just flat out bizarre.  Im not really sure what category AqPop falls into, but I guess Im leaning towards good but bizarre.

I dont even know how to pronounce the bands name, and the album art is a tad odd.  Maybe this is because AqPop is a foreign band from Norway, and I just dont have the context to delineate their objectives very clearly.  The music is surprisingly very good on this album, but it has a manic pop attitude and some very forceful organ-like keyboard riffs blasting through energy-charged rock songs.  There are catchy melodies, and the words are English; but everything just seems a bit peculiar to my ears, and I dont really know why.

Actually, I once got the same sensation listening to early records by Our Lady Peace, a band of which Ive never been a huge.  Their early stuff just had so much energy and emphatic vocals and squeaky guitars, it was as though they were hitting you in the face with a brick to prove how many sounds they could throw at you at once.  I guess I value a bit of subtlety in music, but that could be my own taste. I cant really blame AqPop for developing their own style of manic rock n roll.  Most of the tracks on the album left me with the same impression, but if you check out the MP3 for Radio 60 on the bands website, youll get a good sample of what this band can do when theyre clicking.
