In Other Fictions
I like this album. Its quiet and brooding, but it has a solid indie feel to it with a fine sense of musical control. There is a cello, organ, violin, a few guitars, lots of sparse melancholic notes, and a singer who sings his words clearly and distinctively. The album doesnt jump out and scream revolutionary when I throw it in, but that doesnt mean its not good. Argentine reminds me a lot of some of their fellow New Yorkers like Longwave. The music is more brooding than Longwave though, so Argentine just might come out on top depending on your taste. It seems like I unintentionally compare many bands to Longwave nowadays. Has anyone yet patented a new derogatory name for this mopey-pop music I like so much? Id like to know if they have, or maybe Ill work on one for next week. Tracks such as The World Gets Younger can build a pretty heavy sound as well, though Argentine relies on this trick less frequently. As far as the vocals, the lead vocalist reminds me most of the singer from Clinic. The vocals arent nearly as frenetic as Clinic though, which is probably a good thing. Instead, the vocals here breed a thick sort of tension that suits the music pretty well. Is Argentine the next big band? Probably not. Would I be proud if I had created this album? Definitely, yes.
