Arms of
Kismet: Eponymous
Arms of Kismet IS Mark Doyon. Doyon is your vocalist extraordinaire on this record because in addition to the warm vocals, he also plays all the instruments and does all of his own sampling. Eponymous is a mix of traditional type guitar, drum loops, a tad o distortion, and a little folk. It makes for a cohesive album that in its originality, can take you back to another place with one chord change. Towards the end of Standby, there is an electric guitar chord that reminds me of the song they play in La Bamba when Ritchie Valens plane goes down and he and two other musical legends buy it for no good reason. This is only significant with regards to Doyon, because it illustrates the memory-evoking feeling of his music. I like that in music sometimes. Songs speak in a more emotional way, maybe, but theyre still stories with characters and plot and a point of view. Theyre compact fables, says Doyon. He sings his brand of fables with a true voice and is reminiscent of both Bob Dylan and Michael Penn at moments. His songs touch on universally accepted questions how did I get here? What do I do while Im here? Should I go? Who are you? Okay, not that last one so much, but you get my meaning. Arms of Kismet, or rather Mark Doyon is a talented fellow, and this is a good record. I shall recommend that fans of alternafolkypop pick up this album and dont cry when he sings, I poured the wine down the drain. I know; it made me sad as well.
