Astropop 3: Anything (single)
[Planting Seeds]

The single Anything is the most recent release from Virginia Beachs Astropop 3, who are about to release their next full-length, Allies and Stepping Stones. This single contains tracks from this forthcoming album. In addition to the A-side Anything, the release includes the B-side, Never Seen the Sun, and two unlisted live tracks (that are listed as Forget Tomorrow and Forget Tomorrow Part 2 Instrumental if you stick the CD into a computer).

One of the most noticeable aspects of Astropop 3s live performance is how much it differs from their recordings, and this release depicts that perfectly.  When I saw Astropop 3 perform, I was surprised and impressed by how much jamming (for lack of a better word) was involved with each song. Every song was drawn out to the max, and the room filled with loud and thick, guitar-heavy noise-pop created by only 3 band members.  Well, that is exactly what we hear on these two hidden live tracks, and the instrumental track even has a psychedelic vibe.  Contrast that with the two listed songs, which are both serene little pop nuggets in the vein of the bands last full-length, Eclipsing Binary Star.  The B-side is actually the better track here.  Where Anything has somewhat generic lyrics and never quite reaches a musical high point, the more upbeat Never Seen the Sun has a great hook and is a more memorable tune overall.

The CD ends at the conclusion of the drawn-out instrumental live track with singer Dan Villanueva telling the crowd, And now, were going to go back to some pop stuff, because I like that.  And if you have the CD on repeat, then that is exactly what they do.
