Theory: Promise to the Refrigerator EP
Never make a promise. So pronounces not only the title track on this six-track EP, but the liner notes as well. I cant help but think that the duo comprising Avoidance Theory should follow its own advice. From the police scanner opener to the bird call closer, the Promise to the Refrigerator EP feels like a 20-minute promise that never gets fulfilled. The instrumental set, Untitled Bells and Bells Revenge, with their bell samples and vaguely lo-fi electronic zapping, could almost be interestingly bizarre if only it ever went anywhere. The other four songs consist of breathily delivered almost-pop, almost-emo lyrics, set atop an almost-memorable backdrop of samples, keyboard, and guitars. In the end, youre left wishing there was a song to like, a melody to hum, or really anything about the CD to stay in your head after the last track ends. As it is, Avoidance Theory shows promise as a concept, but this EP does not fulfill it.
