AWKWARD STAR Awkward Star is the unusual combination of experimental improvisation, gentle pop songs, freely associated spoken-word, and haunting poems mixed with digital samples and an avant-jazz attitude. They produce late-night, dreamy, droning, half-awake melodies and half-conscious conversations, with oddly confusing rhythms underneath. Awkward Star began as a lazy-afternoon daydream on the couch of experimental guitarist Rik Wright's Seattle apartment. Rik was becoming fairly well known around the Pacific Northwest as an improvisational musician, working in acts such as groove instrumentalists Jackhammer Trio and free jazz monsters Disjunkt. Rik wanted to start an experimental project that was accessible not just to those adventurous music listeners who were his audience to date, but also to more mainstream music enthusiasts. Sitting there, half-conscious on the couch, Rik dreamed of a pop group with improvisational tendencies, a group conspicuously named "Awkward Star".
