The Awkward Romance: Covington
[Day Job]

This quartet from Covington, Georgia delivers music that the band describes as too energetic to be emo, too deep to be pop-punk, too catchy to not be pop, and has too obvious of a mass appeal to be indie rock.  However, Im not so sure that I would agree with all of that.

The members were formerly known as a band called Sunder that began back in 2001 and came to a halt when another band registered the name first, causing the group to change their name to The Awkward Romance.  These boys are not new to music having put out three albums under their previous name, which means they should have their musical style almost pinned down.  Yet they continue to struggle with their style and try to pass it off as a good thing by saying instead of choosing one genre, they set out simply to write the best songs they can, regardless of genre.  The result is powerful, high-energy songs with honest lyrics, clever guitar work and impassioned melodies.  But just because you scream your lyrics, doesnt mean they come from the heart.

My favorite part is when they describe their album as being filled with beautiful melodies, poetic lyrics, and emotional moments in its entirety.  This is coming from a band that includes the lyrics Can you see why I spaz? in their song, Drama for Dummies.  Or lyrics that I suppose are trying to be funny like We have a connection/sorta like the correlation/in between new mustangs/and premature balding in the song It May Concern.  That just screams poetic, doesnt it?  Wait...are you really supposed to say in between?

Overall the album has decent music although certainly nothing spectacular or original.  Mainly the vocals just made it hard for me to listen to the whole album in one sitting.  Its as if they are trying too hard to sound impassioned, but still have little idea how to use the vocals to their advantage.  Not to say this group doesnt have potential, but it may be awhile until they truly figure out where they are going.
