Barbara Ann: Ode To My Freaks
Barbara Anns Ode to My Freaks is a fun, power-packed punk rock album with a dash of sex appeal. The thirteen-track disc comes out swinging with Domino, and doesnt pause for a breath anywhere. The fast, wild beats are equaled in their power by a tiny, young sounding, girlish voice. Barbara Anns vocal talents are surprisingly solid, while she manages to sound unique. As her press kit indicates, Barbara Anns vocal style can be compared to the likes of Cyndi Lauper, but to say that alone would demean the crazy, kick-ass sound that jumps out of the speakers. Lauper was an 80s fad that disappeared from the scene along with jean jackets, and six-inch-high hair. Barbara Anns Ode to My Freaks is anything but faded. Even the mediocre sound quality cant hide her sparkle. All thirteen tracks are frantically paced, with fantastic guitar and drum pieces. It can be difficult to sit still while listening. The guitar riffs are inventive, yet predictable in a positive way. The listener will find it easy to enjoy the entire CD, from track one to track thirteen. Unfortunately, the CD doesnt contain liner notes, which means no lyrics. Her punk style makes it difficult to understand what she is saying at certain times, and liner notes with lyrics certainly would have helped. Domino, the first track, is one of the best, with a spectacular musical introduction that climaxes when Barbara Ann begins to sing. Ode to My Freaks, the title track, is fun and flashy, as is track eight, my personal favorite, Head. Again,
Barbara Anns CD, Ode to My Freaks is a punk lovers delight. Each and every
track is enjoyable, with talented musicians to back up the fun, sexy vocals.
