BELLE & SEBASTIAN Belle & Sebastian, a band that was named after a French novel about a boy and his dog, were formed in
1996 in Glasgow, Scotland. While undertaking a music business course, Stuart Murdoch and Stuart David decided to form a band and release a record.
They assembled a seven-piece band and in May of 1996, they self-released their debut album,
Tigermilk, only 1,000 copies of the album, were released. It unexpectedly became a
success and the band was soon snapped up by a Jeepster records scout, and, If You're Feeling
Sinister, was released later that same year to much critical acclaim.
The band was likened to Scott Walker, The Smiths, Simon & Garfunkel,
and The Velvet Underground amongst others. Their combination of folk-rock and
60s pop with soft delicate melodies and surreal lyrics soon captivated the music press and public alike. They performed in some rather unconventional venues, homes, libraries and church halls along with the more usual coffeehouses. Their popularity grew and it was not long before a large cult following had been attained with minimal publicity. Their contribution to the British music scene was
recognized in 1999 with a Best Newcomer award at the Brits award show. Following completion of
Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant, Stuart David departed to concentrate on his own band Looper.
The other members of the band are involved in numerous side projects and collaborations. The soundtrack to Todd Solondz's new film,
Storytelling, was released in June of 2002. DISCOGRAPHY:
