The Ben Quck: Russian Real Estate
[Pipe Dream]

If youre out there looking for some good old heart pounding, pop/rock, then this is the album for you.  Tossing Russian Real Estate into my stereo has easily been the most pleasant experience of my week, and even though Im finishing the review, I highly doubt that Ill be shelving this one any time soon.  Pittsburghs alternative rock band, The Ben Quick, has released a powerful album heavy with punk influences long forgotten by the current indie music trends.

The album is thick with violent guitars, heavy drum lines, and a mixture of intermingled male/female vocals.  And, happily, everything works.  From track to track, the album consistently delivers hard driving, high energy music that holds your attention, and has the added bonus of being remarkably danceable.  Their first full length album proves to be a solid display of their abilities in the indie pop/rock arena.

Moe from Egypt opens the album with intense drums, raging vocals, and grinding guitars.  But The Ben Quick does not allow the opening track to dictate the flavor of the album.  The hard hitting punk current serves as a spine for Russian Real Estate, but it does not hold the band back.  One moment of distinct change on the album is with The Passengers, which is easily my favorite track.  It adds a lighter pop feel but still blends completely into the fold of the album.  .And now is the Winter of my Discontent opens on a repetitive guitar tune and quickly adds layers of scratchy breathy vocals, a steady drum beat, and intertwining melodies.

Everything about this album is catchy and wont fail to disappoint.  The Ben Quick proves time and again that they have the talent to provide the music world with some staying power.
