Benjamin:
Independent Release
Benjamin, a.k.a. Ben Martel, released an independent release. He wrote the songs, mixed the recordings, played most of the instruments, and, more than likely, took care of every other little detail, himself. Sure that isn't uncommon, but this is good stuff. The songs are decent, definitely catchy, and they sound really great. While these are the types of songs that would be popular amongst a college crowd who enjoy Dave Matthews (and wear white hats CONSTANTLY), and that is not me, I can appreciate the talent displayed in them. Sometimes the album gets downright lame, however, with the layered vocals "la la la-ing", and "don don don-ing". Ben Martel definitely loves layering his vocals, and using effective panning to make the songs sound very full. The standout track on this album is "Hannah Rose," a gem of a pop song. It's got the heartfelt and catchy lyrics, smooth production, and perfect length (at just over four minutes). This song is drastically different, however, from the track "Glorified Bum," where he doesn't so much sing, as talk fast melodically. It's difficult to take seriously. The final track, "Lady," in which the title is repeated far too many times, also gets rather boring. At the end of the album, I find myself slightly disappointed with the experience. Then I remember he did everything himself, and I appreciate the work gone into it. If you like acoustic pop rock, this album is for you. If you don't, I would stay away from it. Ben is certainly a talented young man, with an ear for catchy music, an eye for design, and a voice made for the radio.
