The Big Bender Records 2004 Winter Sampler: music for cowboys and girls. Pop this CD into your trucks sound system and listen to what its got to offer. Five bands are featured, with two songs each. Lets give each of them a listen, boys. Railbenders: These guys open up the CD with their tune Whiskey Rain. This song was exactly what I was expecting from this CD: minor chords, washtub bass, and songs about drinkin. Besides that, their two songs arent anything spectacular. The performance is stellar, but the singer always sounds slightly off-key. It makes repeat listens more painful than pleasurable. Still, get a few beers in your belly, and theyre just right. Marty Jones and the Pork Boilin Poor Boys: Mix Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash and you got Marty Jones. Two songs about drinking with a rockabilly base. Very nice. In fact, I think I will join Marty and have a Bronson. Marty Jones has a perfect voice for this stuff. Rumbly and charismatic at once. You will like it. Honky Tonk Hangovers have some big shoes to fill after Marty bought me a few rounds and rocked the house down. Do they do it? Nah, not really. I cant stand country drawls. It sounds fake. Skip. Rodney James and the Blue Flames: Well Rodney James aint no Marty Jones, and the Blue Flames aint no Pork Boilin Poor Boys. In fact, Rodneys voice sounds downright ridiculous. So much so, that I better finish off this 4th brew, and get on with this review. The Dalhart Imperials have quite the job to do, what with closing this CD and all. With classic 50s pop chord progressions and a decent singer mixed with the beer affecting my bran (and my typing skills) ahh shit, I forgot where that sentence was going. These guys are pretty good, just trust me. And thanks for being my friend, really. No, no, seriously, thank you. In conclusion, this compilation may not be wonderful on its own, but when you give it a chance after some drinkin, it makes perfect sense. Its like a secret code.
