Billy Coulter: Self-Titled
[Confluence]

On a self-titled album that was 20 years in the making, Washington, D.C. native Billy Coulter reveals rock as meaty as the forearm he uses to clutch his guitar in press photos.

Accompanying these snapshots in the liner notes are Coulters written thanks to John Lennon and Ian Hunter for inspiring this songwriter to be sincere. While the sincerity of a name like Mott the Hoople can be questioned, Coulters upfront, honest approach cannot. As he confesses in Being Human: I tried to be perfect, and I tried being cool/so Ill try being human, if thats all right with you.

The twelve tracks come off as drawn from direct experience, an assumption that Coulter confirmed to be true in an Internet interview. In sexy opener In Your Dreams, he claims to be able to see your fate, in your stars/I can tell you baby whats in these cards. Rather than a pompous reference to a romantic future, Coulter revealed that the song is actually about a phone call he received while reading tarot cards on the Psychic Hotline.

This work history may explain why some of Coulters new work is, well, predictable. His press information promises the ideal balance of American Roots and British Classic Rock two genres that, like their countries current administrations, tend to lean toward the conservative. Coulter doesnt venture far from the ethos of rock n roll as established by idols the Rolling Stones especially on straight rock numbers like Aurora and Bad Day to Run into You.

But who doesnt like the Stones, or rock n roll? The answer: nobody. And as long as that fact stands true, meaty rock like Coulters will still be worth biting into.
