Binary Dolls:
Too Much Thinking Sinks Ships
Binary Dolls contrary to their name are a three-piece band, and you'd do well to know about this trio of musical vigilantes from Portland, OR. I could go on for days about how "lo-fi" they are musically or how "earnest" the lyrics are, but I won't. I'd feel guilt and shame, though, if I didn't give these guys their propers. However, the task is to review this sort of record objectively, but it's damn near impossible. All I can say is that if you're pining for the peak era of Sebadoh and Pavement, then your record collection is begging you to buy Too Much Thinking Sinks Ships. That's how I felt personally until I heard "These Are My Friends," and I'm glad I can now admit my deficiency to my peers. A shining jewel in this recording lies in its quasi-electronica outpourings. You don't have to be the world's most obsessed fan of Mm or Dntel to get your NASA-on with "Don't Talk to Me about Love" and "Lucia Joyce." I'll stop now and say this: the record fookin' rools, dudes! I shouldn't really have to tell you anything else about it, but people always want to complicate written transmissions with alliteration, metaphors and other useless literary tools which I'm normally a big an of but telling you that the "record fookin rools" should say it all. I have a tendency to overextend my fluency in the English language in hopes of constructing a concise summary of an otherwise vapid music recording. This is precisely why Too Much Thinking Sinks Ships is a perfect name for this album, as I'm going against all the conventions of what is typically called "music journalism," and why shouldn't I? Rolling Stone and Spin haven't made me any offers yet, and if you're reading Left off the Dial, it's because you want to find out about the good shit. So, go get this album already. And don't thank me for it, because I didn't make this music; I'm just telling you about it.
