Blastmat: Theme for a Dying World

Blah.  Totally generic hardcore.  This Connecticut foursome mixes a straightahead punk rock stomp with the bombastic solos and heavily reverbed vocals of metal, while managing to do absolutely nothing interesting in the process.  The original punk bands were bonded by an aesthetic and a worldview, but musically, they sounded nothing alike.  So its ironic that now you become a punk band by coloring within the lines.  Seriously, there is not an original thought anywhere on this album.  I can guarantee that if your hometowns population is greater than 400, there is a band in your area that sounds exactly like Blastmat.  How could a band with any kind of artistic drive be content to duplicate every other hardcore band that has ever existed?  This satisfaction with mediocrity touches every aspect of Theme for Dying World.  The drums go thumpa thumpa thumpa thumpa, the guitar solos go widdle-eee-widdle-ee-widdle-eee-WHEEEEE! and the vocals go BLAH BLAH BLAH!  BLAH BLAH BLAH!  The lyrics are generally obsessed with the evils of organized religion, but are so formulaic and dogmatic that even an audience sympathetic to their views would have trouble finding any intelligent points to agree with.  The singer could just say, Religion is bad!  Religion is bad! over and over again and still be covering the topic in the same depth.  If you really care about something enough to write eleven songs about it, maybe you should do some research and go into more detail about what exactly bothers you about it instead of just lapsing into meaningless sloganeering.  Just a tip from your friendly Left Off the Dial CD reviewer.
