Blindside Seven: Shoot the Moon
[self-released]

A good bar circuit band, but I can't imagine much more happening from Blindside Seven's "\Shoot to the Moon.  For the first few tracks, most of David Mauldin's vocals seem to hover around the same range.  In other words, it takes away from that initial bang one is looking for when listening to a new release the bang that tells you this is really something different from the rest of the pop pack out there.

To me, most songs seem to fit in the "Gin Blossoms/Blink-182-on-sedatives" category with a little bit of God forbid Creed, as is evident on the fourth track, "Free."  The sixth track, "Don't Let Go," even takes the listener into Metallica territory.  Whether it is the conscious effort of this band to please as many people as possible, or whether this actually reflects their creative scope remains to be revealed.  Maybe it's just me, but even the "Blindside Seven" name troubles me as being too contrived and in synch with the names of bands currently out there who serve the same category. Think (again) of Blink 182, or Matchbox Twenty, or Third Eye Blind.  I don't like knowing what to expect THAT much.

Reviewing bands like this is the toughest of assignments.  The guys are good at their instruments, are tight in production, not bad at vocals, and professional at packaging and presenting a large-label-like CD & liner notes (OK...maybe the last is not a good idea for everyone).  However, these bands are the ones you tell readers to check out for themselves to confirm your convictions. You know listen first, buy later. So there, I've said it again.
