Bling Kong: Do the Awesome
[Redder]

Bling Kong is an unusual pop group, in that its membership includes four cheerleaders, three drummers, two guitarists, a bassist and a video DJ. Its sound draws liberally from upbeat sources, such as The B-52s and The Go-Gos, and many of these eight songs come off like variations on Tony Basils pep rally hit, Mickey.

This group also obviously believes in self promotion, because it not-so-subtly incorporates its name into the songs Bling Kong Girls, Enter Bling Kong, and Bling Kong Is Red Hot here. None of these songs make social statements of any kind, however, because these boys and girls just want to have fun. Besides, pep rallies are all about getting the blood pumping, rather than stimulating the brain.

These tunes are consistently percussive, though there is also some slight rhythmic variation from track to track. For instance, A Song I Know has a bit of a Motown beat driving it, and Enter Bling Kong, which features an aggressive lead vocal, is underpinned by a noticeable electro groove and sports chunky, rock guitar.

Bling Kong may be a name more fitting for a burly rapper, but there is nothing at all urban going on here. Instead, this large group of musicians just wants to drink, dance, party and Do the Awesome, as if life was one long college weekend.
