Meridian: We Almost Made It Home...
Right before I listened to We Almost Made It Home for the very first time, I watched an episode of The Simpsons. In this particular episode, Snake makes a getaway and says Buuye in his classic laidback tone. Perhaps it was an odd coincidence, but when I later listened to the album, I was amazed and surprised by the lead singers voice in I Wonder What That Windshield Tastes Like? Has Snake decided to form a rock band? His voice slightly resembled what Snake might have sounded like if hed picked up a microphone. However, this group from Vancouver, B.C. is far from a comedy act. They have a classic rock meets alt-country style that fits well with the tone of the vocals. With obvious influences from rockers like Neil Young, these guys have blended an interesting mix of styles that one minute has you thinking youve heard it before and the next minute, thinking theyve put a new curve in the road. One song in particular, The Sun Always Rises (For You) had me scratching my head for weeks wondering where on earth I had heard that guitar line before. But if I heard it before, why couldnt I figure it out? Its like theyve managed to craft a song that shouldve been made but didnt finally make it out until now. Blood Meridians songs are often softened by the addition of the female voice. This is a welcome addition, especially when there is a dark cloud looming just over the horizon. The music is well-crafted and produced. The band also has a knack for some interesting, yet simple, harmonization. And with the help of the band members diversity, the tracks manage to stay interesting all the way to the end. I didnt find myself thinking Id heard it all before I hit the midway point. Instead I enjoyed the mix of country-tinged guitar, melodic piano, catchy undertones and dark lyrics all the way to the end. I found myself especially getting hooked on Oh, Oh, Oh, which easily wedged its way inside my mind to linger for hours after listening.
