Blow Up Hollywood: Fake
[SM]

This group believes in making music that defies the hype; yet they have a knack for writing pop songs, and the instrumentals are vaguely reminiscent of something you might hear woven through an emotional drama or independent film.  This is not a bad thing, just a little funny.  In fact, the music is nicely crafted, expansive, and beautiful.  The evocative strings can easily carry the listener away into a dream world.  The surreal landscape is a somewhat dark place however, hiding behind the shadows just before the first light shines over the horizon.  Make sure to take a scarf, because it can get a little cold at times.

The most obvious thing about the album to me is the lead singers voice and how it blends with the music.  I feel like the music and his voice live on separate planes.  When I first put in the disc, I was a bit surprised when the vocals began.  Its not that the combination sounds bad; it just doesnt seem to fit together quite right.  Its as though his voice is too melodic for the music.  Given the lyrics and the tone, I think I would prefer something a little more eerie and rough around the edges.  He has what I like to call an instrumental voice.  It is as fluid as a saxophone and seamlessly changes from note to note. It would be like taking music from the Nine Inch Nails and substituting Shawn Smith for Trent Reznor.

I recently took a drive over a narrow, winding pass through the mountains, and since I left after work, it was dark during a good portion of my trip.  The road snaked along a river and was lit by moonlight that cast interested shadows on the adjacent rock wall.  It was at this time that I enjoyed the tracks of Fake the most and found my interest to grow with each continual listen.  The music is intriguing, artful and a good listen for anyone who enjoys a walk in the shadows.
