Brain Regiment: Ancient Spacemen EP
[self-released]

Brain Regiment is a group that consists of the typical rock lineup but also pulls in some keyboards, hand claps, electric kazoo and robot voice and noises.  Their jangly guitars demonstrate the influence of bands like R.E.M. and Guided by Voices.

The bands lead vocalist has an interesting Weird Al mixed up with John Darnielle sound.  At first I wasnt wild about it, but after a few listens, it grew on me though at times I found that the vocals sounded a little forced.  However, he uses his voice well, the harmonies blend nicely, and it sounds quite decent with the music.

On You Throw Satellites, they pull out a punchy, sun-bopping Beach Boys influenced tune that is full of la la las and a completely different vocal style that works well for the group, providing a nice break.  I have to say the song could have done without the robot voice, but other than that its a pretty enjoyable listen.

Aside from the vocal anomaly in the bunch, another tune I particularly found fascinating was Everlasting Sun with its catchy guitar riffs and bouncy drums.  It also seemed to be particularly fitting with the nasal vocals.

There wasnt a single song on the Ancient Spaceman EP that I thought was bad.  With this band just starting out, there is certainly some potential.
