Brief Candles: Self-Titled
[Silent Film Soundtracks]

I must say I enjoyed listening to this self-titled release from Brief Candles.  It's a nice sort of ethereal rock album.  Much of it resembles what might be a relaxing sample from the 4AD record catalog perhaps with a dash of Mogwai thrown in but there is a good mix of rockier elements in the music as well.  The seven-minute "Castaway" has a sort of Lush atmosphere (pun fully intended), but the drumrolls and baseline come through nice and clear, presenting a more unique feel to the song.  Other pleasers include the soothing female vocals that remind me a bit of The Gentle Waves, perhaps.  On another song called "All My Gates," Kevin Dixon takes on vocal duties, and I really like this song as well.

In general, if you're a 4AD addict like me, you'll love Brief Candles, because they've put together a solid release that still manages to be distinct in its own way.  I'm impressed by this band, and I kind of wish this release had more than seven songs, but the songs are nice and long, so it certainly qualifies as a strong release deserving of more attention in my book.
