Piephoff: Good People
From down around Greensboro, North Carolina, Bruce Piephoff has been making music for a long time it seems. Good People is apparently his twelfth album, and hes got some interesting talents. Basically, the guys a singer-songwriter, and the acoustic guitar and harmonica will make you feel at home on tracks like El Dorado if you like a bit of the classic Nashville, Tennessee sound. Theres a bit of Lou Reed in Through Thin Hotel Walls not really Velvet Underground, but it reminds me a lot of Lous recent Ecstasy album. Piephoffs singing is just styled in that poetic sort of fashion where his vocal poem isnt forced into the music; rather the music just kind of backs things up in a confident manner. But this album definitely has a Southern rock atmosphere to it. Nick and Lucy has an Appalachian Mountain feel with a bit of female vocals and banjo backing things up. Equally amusing is He Got Drunk at the David Allan Coe Show, which details the DUI arrest of a man among other characters whove obviously seen better days. The music here comes off as really sincere and accomplished, which you would hopefully expect from somebody who has put as much time into their craft as Piephoff has. This isnt the kind of music I listen to a whole lot nowadays, but this album really stands out in an enjoyable way. The acoustic guitar is very soothing and accomplished, and some interesting rhythms are used to back up the songs differently. Twenty Miles to Baghdad has a cool blues feel to it that is a funny choice for its modern day subject. All and all this is a nice collection of songs. Simple as that.
