Bryan Master:
Incommunicado
This multi-instrumentalist out of New York City got hooked on music at a young age, starting with the piano and trumpet. From there he got into the drums and joined a local act before finally picking up an acoustic guitar and settling on the singer-songwriter path. At the age of 27, he still has many places he can go, but for now, his chosen direction suits him well. This follow-up album to his debut Lost At Sea brings us seven intelligently written tracks that each have their own something special. Karmacide starts the album with upbeat music and witty lyrics. My personal favorite is the closer, With all those youve burned/You never quite learned/ That karma attracts/Only what one lacks. Next, with Closure, Master gets a little heavier and sounds like someone who cant let go when he sings that he doesnt think that its really over. Midway through the album is a toe-tapping, guitar-based groovin song called Heaven Only Knows. Master lowers his voice in a softer, yet grittier way that blends well with the music. This song is downright fun and I cant help but want to clap along while I shake my head and shoulders. Find The Words is a bluesy tune with piano and harmonica, followed by And What For? in which Master breaks out of his soft shell to deliver the clever chorus Dropping bombs for peace/ Is like fucking for virginity. Imcommunicado closes with a beautiful acoustic tune, Count to Ten. The sparse piano accompanies low, harmonious vocals as he leaves us with inspiring lines to follow our own dreams. These are smart words from a man who is following his own path towards what very well could be a bright future.
