Bullistic:
Eye for an Eye
Within the first five seconds of vocals on Eye for an Eye, I was convinced that I was hearing a pretty decent Robert Plant impersonation. A quick listen to the reverb-doused screeching on "Satisfy Me" and "Oh No (Not Again)" should be enough to convince you too. Bullistic's music itself further reinforces the Zeppelin comparison: it's dirty, bluesy hard rock that goes chugga chugga chugga while simultaneously going "hey baby, baby!!" Actually, the real lyrics are "say that you really need me baby! / say that you really need me mama!" (from the "Satisfy Me"). Eye for Eye definitely sounds like it could have come out thirty years ago. Pretty much every song on Eye for an Eye is a mid-tempo hard rocker that would make a normal person bob his or her head back and forth at least a little. Some of the material is catchy and kind of exciting. "Drunken Dayz" and "So Long" are rockers that feel like a cruise down the highway in a GTO convertible. And of course, every song has a badass guitar solo. The main problem with the guitar solos is that they all sound the same (hell, maybe they are all the same?). Come to think of it, a lot of the songs sound the same. Mid-tempo rocker, screechy vocals, guitar solo. Repeat. It gets old pretty quickly. Eye for Eye definitely could have used more variation. However, we get a hint of something different every now and then. The title track has a cool double kick drum rhythm that reminds me of Primus. "Your Imagination" has a chilled out Hendrix vibe that works well enough. And "Sierras Faith," the final track, is a pretty acoustic number. Nonetheless, the middle of the album starts to get annoying due to the repetition. All told, Bullistic is a talented band, and Eye for an Eye has four to six good songs. It's fun music, and Im willing to bet Bullistic would be a cool live band. With more variation in their music, I think they would be able to hold my interest for more than fifteen minutes.
