The Burning Dirty Band: Caught
Man, am I the wrong person to review this album. One of my favorite things in the world is a song. Give me a record full of good songs, and Ill latch onto it and play it to death, and tell everyone I know that you must get this. As long as words are put to a great melody (preferably with goose-bump inducing harmonies), I am easily hooked. On the surface, this sounds easy, but its actually one of the hardest things to accomplish well. Sure, I had my mid-high school dabbles with the bland, hippie bands and the mediocre, acoustic rockers, but I eventually found what I liked and cut the bad stuff away. So basically, when I read the press sheet for the Burning Dirty Bands debut album, I knew it probably wouldnt be my cup of tea. There is a lot of music on this disc, but there arent any songs to speak of. There are lots of chord progressions and lyrics that hint that they may turn into songs, but they actually turn out to be the introductions to guitar and keyboard solos and various bits of jamming. Throughout the albums eleven tracks, the band never succeeds in establishing any kind of mood unless the feeling they want to create is hey, pass that joint over here, or man, what times that frat party again? Theres no feeling ofwell, anything. There arent really any sad songs on here, but there arent any songs that seem to inspire joy either. Sometimes, when bands say they have many and varied influences, it turns out that they have assimilated everything theyve ever heard and created something new, or at least integrated all of it and given it a neat twist. Other times, it just means theyve written a song that sounds like a Chili Peppers song, so they must have been influenced by funk. The record sounds good, production wise, and was produced by Steve West, who has worked with Pavement, among others. If youre someone who likes to go to bars and watch bands play long songs where you dont really have to pay attention, then this is probably something youll like. If you like well-written songs that know just when to stopwell, have you heard the new Rhett Miller record?
