The Burning
Dirty Band: 17 Year Sun
Though The Burning Dirty Band has cut its teeth in the jam festival circuit, theyre not your typical noodely jam wanks. These guys bring all the stomp of backwoods Virginia, kickin up dust behind them. I must admit, right to boot, this is not exactly my taste in music; I reluctantly set it on spin and ran back to listen to it in my room during commercial breaks in a rock documentary I was watching. As I sat at the edge of my bed, a few times I did daze off a bit and forgot what I was doing. By not your typical jam junk, I mean that they piece in elements of garage boogie and even ragtime adding flecks of original flare. On the second listen, I was drawn in a little deeper. More musical elements became apparent, and my attention was pulled in a bit more than before. Unfortunately, the band digresses into grooves that extend a little too far outside the song boundary, but for the most part, my mind did not wander too far in the other direction. There is too much complexity happening at once to allow for any sort of dozing or window staring. I suppose a little daydreaming was induced, but that was all good music imagery of dimly lit, smoke-filled bars with swingin saloon doors, creakin wood floorboards, tables and chairs, and the bright orange dusk sun kickin at my eyes complete with a rough-looking band hackin away in the corner. These good ol boys bring a playful dirty boogie and barroom shuffle to an otherwise offbeat, lost Saturday afternoon. Even though the Burning Dirty Bands demographic is most assuredly jam-oriented, the piano sticks out, breathing new ragtime life into a somewhat shaky body that might have otherwise been lost on this reviewer. The vocals are rich and tone-full with a hell of a lot of soul, melody and pop sensibility (sometimes reminiscent of old ghosts of 60s Haight St). All in all, I give these guys a few rads and a thumbs-up. They are each phenomenal musicians offering their own sparks, recognizing plain fun and class. The album is worth checking out for the piano and complexity.
