Cannonball
Jane: Street Vernacular
Cannonball Jane is the lo-fi solo recording project of elementary music teacher Sharon Hagopian. Its a friendly, energetic recording. Sharon uses samplers, keyboards, guitar, bass, piano, and beatboxes to make music that sounds like it was written by a cute Japanese pop band in neon miniskirts. The most engaging aspect of the music is the retro sounding beats, which switch up enough to keep you guessing. It sounds like someone tossed a vintage 80s drum machine down a flight of stairs. The rhythms clatter, but in a good way. A lot of the vocals have a bit too much reverb and are down too low in the mix, making it difficult to interpret exactly what shes saying half the time. Her voice is bright and clean, which makes listening a pleasant experience even if you cant figure out the lyrics. The only time she doesnt sound 110% optimistic is in Brave New World, when she shouts Take medication! in the chorus. Still, its angst with a smile. The guitar and bass here are very simple, leaving the keyboards to be the focal instrument. While the playing demonstrates obvious talent, some of the tones used are questionable. A little bit more complimentary sound choices would have helped these songs sound a bit more cohesive. As they are, they sound like a musical grab-bag fed through a food processor, which grabs your attention at first but ultimately wears thin on repeat listens. Standout tracks are Slumber Party and Such Is the Score. If youre into home-recorded stuff, check this out.
