Caribou: The Milk of Human Kindness
[Domino]

The man formerly known as Manitoba (see: stupid trademark infringement case) is reborn as Caribou, but the name thing is just a formality, really.  Dan Snaiths music is an adventurous and altogether pleasing affair, if not a slightly dizzying one.  Like Beck, hell borrow a little of everything (hip hop, garage, electronica, etc.) and mash it into one, packing a vibrant, textured sound with the emotional wallop of say, Tangerine Dream.  If it doesnt always work, you need not wait more than a few minutes sometimes less for something more enticing to come along.

Surprisingly, some of the stronger tracks are the hip-hop-influenced ones, like Lord Leopard and Pelican Narrows, which capitalize on strong beats and oscillating synth lines to achieve Chemical Brothers-like coolness.  Others, like the propulsive and slightly grating Yeti typify the forward motion and manic quality of the record; but the best song here is Bees, which for lack of better analysis, sounds like something The Velvet Underground wouldve done with the same instruments.  It shares an attitude.

Barnowl, as a closer, is a blast, and an ideal summation of the record: incessant beat, high vocal drones, plucked guitar lines, blips, bleeps, weird fragments, noise freak-outs, tension-and-release.  Its immediate, urgent, at times wonderful, and can you believe that fucking asshole took him to court?
