Carina Round: Disconnection
[Interscope]

Carina Rounds latest, The Disconnection, is a sentimental album sung by a vocally artistic Brit.  She released her first album in 2001, The First Blood Mystery, which is a mostly acoustic flavored submission. The follow-up just released in the States this past March is a more aggressive record, owing much to the presence of the electric guitar and at the same time, its emotionally raw from Carinas ability to strain her vocals from sweet to biting.

Her songs shadow her life and those trouncing around in it, and she seems to do this on purpose.  She knows shes good but not in a hey, look at me, I am pissed off and cute, kind of way.  Not holding back and letting her vulnerabilities peek through sets her apart from your average singer/songwriter.  The unpretentious way her voice cracks and the need it conveys gives her a realness, and people connect to that... you can almost feel it yourself.

One might think that playing with such popular lads as Coldplay or Ryan Adams would taint someone with less character but not Ms. Round.  She can count those boys as contemporaries, or in Adams case, a partner in songwriting occasionally, and remain grounded and focused on her goals as a musician.  She has drawn many comparisons, including Patti Smith, and I might say a tinge of Tori Amos; but it is most often PJ Harvey that pops into musical minds when they hear Carina.  Personally, I think that PJ Harvey is one of the most brilliant artists of my time and consider any comparison a compliment.  But dont get me wrong where there are similarities, there are great differences as well.  These are artists we are talking about, and they each hone their craft in very distinct ways. Carina is a bit more understated but still gets in her punches.  She has recorded quite a fantastic record and will probably continue to record more if that is where her passion lies. You should certainly pick up a copy.
