Casey Abrams:
Like a Mirror
Casey Abrams plays what he calls tramp art music. Tramp art is the art of the wandering story-teller that uses whatever material he can find and creates these pieces using his imagination and the abilities he has picked up through his travels. One could easily imagine Abrams singing his stories around the light of a fire with the company of other wandering souls. Like a Mirror is a companion piece to Thirteen American Ghosts. Where the previous release provided a full band look at his brilliant stories, his newest contribution brings us a more intimate setting in which to experience his songs. To hear his music blasting out of a car stereo seems completely absurd. I want to take this album back with me to my childhood. I would pull out my dusty blue record player and sit with it on the back porch of my grandparents trailer. With the mountains in the distance, the cool breeze on my face and the rows of corn just a few feet away, this would be a more appropriate setting than the freeway on a busy weekend afternoon. Twelve-Bar Blues open and close this album, immediately highlighting his unique finger-picking guitar style that accompanies his raw voice in each piece. Abrams blends together his own style that is both reminiscent of such folk artists as Paul Simon but pull in a tinge of more modern styles of jazz and rock. From whimsical to ranting, Abrams songs are not content to sit in the background. They must be held close and enjoyed word by word in a cozy setting as if you were sitting around your own campfire, listening to stories of ghosts and robbery. In a time when the singer-songwriter has stood up and asked the world to take notice, this is the perfect moment for Casey Abrams, who has the talent to stand in the front of the crowd.
