Cass McCombs:Not The Way (EP)
[Monitor]

All of the artwork for Cass McCombs EP, Not The Way, is done in black and dark blue a hint of the slow, dark, and haunting music found within.  This is a lazy, organic record; one that makes for the perfect soundtrack to pass out to after a long night of drinking by yourself.  Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover.

Casss voice strains when he sings, but it does not detract from the recording It actually enhances it, lending to it a certain honesty that is missing from most of todays music.  But this music is so nostalgic that its hard to compare it to modern music at all.  None of these songs are going to be radio hits.  None of these songs are going to propel McCombs into superstardom.  But I have a feeling that Cass couldnt care less, and neither do I.

The EPs songs have the bare minimum of instrumentation, keeping things simple, yet the sound fills up the room.  Its almost background music.  Its almost a shadow on the wall.

Only Opium Flower seems to be too slow, and it goes on for a little too long.  The other songs are more considerate and dont wear out their welcome.  The opening title track is a good one, but all of the material on this release is pretty strong.

Look for Cass on tour with labelmates, Oxes in the very near future, as well as his full length album in a few months.
