For those who have never visited Cincinnati, home of Skyline Chili, the Reds, and the occasional race riot, it is well worth the trip. The streets are meandering and hilly, the river is turgid, and the sky is a haze and smog filled umbrella. For some reason though, this dying city by the river, the malt liquor capital of Ohio, often produces some pretty good indie rock. Nobody knows why; maybe its all the fumes in the air or the smell of processing liquor from the distilleries that floats into the city when the wind is just right. Maybe it is your crystal meth smoking neighbor who cant stop explaining to you, as he fidgets nervously, that bands in his day really rocked, you knowHEAVY. You wonder when this toothless lunatic ever had a day, but it doesnt really matter. Even if everything else about Cincinnati was bad (and it may be), a city that produced the Afghan Whigs cant be all badright? Well, unfortunately, the latest release from another up and coming Cincinnati bandCaterpillar Tracksdoes nothing to repair the citys possibly undeserved, possibly deserved reputation. If bands were cities, Caterpillar Tracks would be Cincinnati. Not bad enough to really hate, but not good enough to love. There are ideas here, and in this post-(fill in the blank) band, they just dont take those ideas anywhere on this album. It is the same type of thing you have been hearing for yearsangular post-punkish rock that really should have come from the 202 area code rather than 513. This is somewhat deviationist DC punk from the age of J. Robbins. A little faster at times, a little dirtier than what you might be used to, but familiar all the same. While possibly worth a five dollar cover, I wouldnt bother unless the drink specials were good.
