Changes: Self-Titled
[self-released]

The debut release from this Florida-based trio is pleasant enough; the songs are pretty good, with some slightly Joe Jackson/Elvis Costello-style vocals.  Unfortunately, the album doesnt really have much of an edge to it.

All of the bio information that Ive read bills this band as power-pop, but they really dont have much power, and the pop isnt really present, either.  Tony Spatarellas vocals dont really do much in the way of expressing emotion, but he is a good guitar player that knows his way around the instrument.  John Bradicich is likewise a pretty good drummer, but the songs just arent up to snuff.  The most embarrassing moment on the album is track five, Dogman, which can basically be summed up by its title.  The music is good, sound-quality-wise and is also mixed well there are virtually no studio bells and whistles, and I would figure that these songs sound pretty much the same way live as they do on the album.  The record gives the impression of trying really hard: decent songs, good playing, but nothing that makes it stand out amongst the many other albums that are released every year.  You do kind of get the feeling that these songs are just something for them to play in between covers (their bio actually makes numerous mention of their classic rock covers).

Changes are a pretty okay band that unfortunately is trying to compete in an industry where even truly great music gets completely ignored.  They simply dont have enough bite to their music to stand out.
