Chantigs: My Door. Your Door. 7" EP
[Rodent]

This 7-inch offering (also available on compact disc) comes as a pleasant surpise from San Francisco-based Rodent Records. As a band, The Chantigs approach their tenth anniversary, but three of the members (Greg Turner, Matt Slavnik, and Josh Bevelacqua) have played together since their youthful days growing up in sunny (sic) Yorktown, VA. The move to San Francisco was inevitable because these three would not have been able to hone their impressive brand of twee-pop anywhere else. This "single" is more of a sampler of five different minute-long snippets that the Chantigs felt would be appreciated fully on one side of a 7-inch record as an overture. It would be unfair to say that this release is innovative in so far as suggesting that no one has ever made songs that sound similar to the ones on this particular record, as hints of The Beatles, The Beach Boys and David Bowie are abound. However, if you can manage to listen to this without making the obvious comparisons, then you surely will be treating your ears to some delightful melodies. On the other hand, if you try to be cutting-edge by first listening to the B-Side, "Bluebird on a lily-Alcatraz, Alcatraz," then you might confuse yourself beyond repair. Supposedly, the optimal manner to hear this side of the record is to pan the left and right speakers as "Bluebird on a lily" and "Alcatraz, Alcatraz" are actually two separate songs blended together. Wicked!
