THE CHARLATANS (UK) Hailing from Manchester, England, The Charlatans (called The Charlatans UK in America because the name had already been claimed by a San Franciscan 60s garage rock band) formed in 1989 in the nascent Madchester music scene. They were to go on to become one of the most famous and longest lasting bands to emerge from the Madchester music movement. The bands contemporary pop sound was similar to that of The Stone Roses, a fuse of 60s melodies, organ riffs and dance-based rhythms. They enjoyed immediate success with their initial singles and their widely acclaimed debut album, Some Friendly, entered the British charts at number one. The band's commercial and critical success continued with their two follow up albums, but as the madchester music period in British music began to fade away, it was widely assumed that so would The Charlatans. The Bands eponymous fourth album released in 1995 was a huge success. The band were hailed as survivors and have proved to be one of the great British bands of the 90s. Their latest album, Wonderland, released in 2001, from which they dropped their traditional organ sound received strong reviews. DISCOGRAPHY:
