Various Artists: Cherub Records Compilation VII
[Cherub]

Cherub Records has put out its second compilation, simply titled V2, of bands from the mid-Atlantic music scene.  A comp can be a tough sell, especially to someone like me who is not that familiar with the area whence the music came. This is because comps tend towards representing a label of entirely the same music which is dull, not to mention awfully repetitive.  However, there are a handful of standouts on this particular album, and it doesnt even matter that I dont read the local fanzines.

Kids Technos contribution Maximillian Cohen is by far my favorite track on this album.  Kids Techno is a one-man mastermind from what I found out not that this is a totally astounding feat these days but its admirable nonetheless.  The soundscape is sad, and this song manages to make you feel something in its slim, two-minute-fourteen-second slot, and to me that means somethin.  When youre hit, you just are.

The Carlsonics rock it a la 70s grooves with Great Cat! and no they arent just another garage band or are they? No, Ive decided they are not.  Either way, the song is good enough that I would check out their live show.  Next on the list is track number four, Post 9/11 Sexual Revolution by Input Lust.  This is a terrifically dirty/raunch track.  Yes, their name and the title of their song would imply sexiness, but better bands have tried this to disastrous results.  Input Lust pulls it off, even if I am not entirely fond of the song title.

I consider three good tracks on one comp a pretty alright haul.  A word to those wise in rock: you are going to want to skip the tracks by We Are Spies and Forget Cassettes. First of all, Forget Cassettes? Cmon brotha whats your problem? I might not listen to my cassettes anymore, but I certainly have not forgotten them and the large box they reside in, in my closet.  Secondly, both tracks made me want to throw my speakers out my 11th floor window.  Im not even exaggerating skip them.
