Citified: Self-Titled
[Eskimo Kiss]

Finally, heres an indie band that lives up to its press release (but come on guys, youre better than The Postal Service).  With acoustic flair and jangly guitars, Citified sounds a bit like a folksy Interpol, and considerably less icy at that.  Singer, Chris Jackson even sounds like Paul Banks, just less monotone, and you can hear some Michael Stipe in there, too.  Its just too bad their debut is only eighteen minutes and change.  This is good stuff.

Hardly the great hook-and-song artists yet, like some of the bands mentioned above, what Citified does in the way of form is not unlike watching a train go by.  A song is there, and then it isnt.  There really arent that many discernable choruses no breaks in the action, just a lilting vocal melody and tuneful backing.  It does little to diminish the quality, but goes a ways in damaging potency, since they havent written anything so good as to be able to write off structure altogether.  If these guys invest a little in ABABCAB they might take over the world, but all the more power to them if they could care less.  Still, with highlights, Overseas and Going Places, this self-titled debut is a fine introduction.
